    Whether skiing the backcountry, dodging jagged rocks, riding singletrack or trail running over slick roots, a strong and powerful core provide the foundation necessary to maximize your potential.  I like to compare a lack of core stability with firing a cannon from a canoe.  Sure, the cannon is a powerful weapon, but it’s largely useless unless fired from a stable platform.  Attempting to use your arms and legs with insufficient core strength is a very inefficient way for you to tackle the outdoor activities you love.

    There have been many innovative “core” exercises introduced over the past decade, as core strength has become a buzzword.  However, the old standby, SIDE PLANK, provides a great deal of bang for your buck.…

    Bend company, Rugged Thread, captured the top award last night at Bend Outdoor Worx, Venture Out Conference at the Tower.  Out of 9 national Outdoor Company finalist, Rugged Thread was chosen to receive $75,000 in funding from Business Oregon to scale their business to a national model. Kim from Rugged Thread presented her vision to create a new repair economy in the outdoor products industry.

    9 outdoor companies will vie for over $100,000 in funding to help them grow their business from Venture Out and Business Oregon.

    Local company, Rugged Thread, is in the mix for Growth Stage companies and will compete with Pedaling Innovations of Grand Junction, Colorado and Nomadix, a California company. Rugged Thread performs repair work on technical outdoor clothing and gear for consumers and also for manufactures. REI, Giant Loop and Mt. Bachelor all use their service for warranty and other repairs.

    A tragic story and a reminder to all of us to be aware of avalanche conditions. Powder.com/stories.  Early season snowfall across the west has skiers and snowboarders out earning turns and avy conditions do exist. The Cone at Mt. Bachelor had a slide on Oct. 13th.  Practice safe backcountry travel at all times, even at Mt. Bachelor at this time of year. Wear your beacon, make sure it’s turned on, don’t travel alone, and work as a group. Be careful all.
