Below is a snippet of Joseph’s journey as a photographer he shared with us. It should provide inspiration to follow your passion in spite of life’s challenges.

“Born and raised in the Willamette Valley, the beauty of the State of Oregon was all around. In high school, I ‘borrowed’ my dad’s early ‘70s Minolta camera kit and never gave it back. Beyond a photojournalism class my junior year of high school and a workshop while at the University of Oregon, my photo-education has been mostly the latter half of trial-and-error.

2011 through 2014 took me on a run of 4 cancer diagnoses, 4 surgeries, and 5 different chemotherapy drugs over 12 treatment cycles. My wife carried me through it all and planning photographic excursions occupied my time recovering. It gave me something to focus on a goal for the future. Around the time of the final surgery, we decided that it was time for a change and a few months later made the move to Bend after having spent time in the SF Bay Area near my wife’s hometown. The dry-side of the mountains, the seasons, and the views have rewarded us in more ways than we can count.

Driving to my day job, there aren’t many glances at the mountains that don’t get me thinking how much I’d rather be up there, arguing with myself about how to better capture a scene that’s been captured thousands of times. Photography is my excuse to chase experiences. The images are my way of sharing them.
